The TORAH from Creation to Noah
Public Readings from the First Book of the TORAH. There are seven readings from the TORAH Scroll in the synagague on each Sabbath, Festival or Holy Day, "Yom Tov." To read the concluding Maftir is an honor. On a regular Sabbath the Maftir is a recitation of the last few verses read from the TORAH portion. On Special Sabbaths, Festivals and days of fasting the Maftir will include readings from other scrolls of the TANAKH. Reading Schedule - The Torah is read publicly over the course of a year, with one major portion read each week in the Shabbat morning service. NOTE: A Parashah or Sidra is a portion of scripture book from the Tanakh (Hebrew Bible).The division of scipture into parashot is often based on a change in topic, change in thought or to to highlight a special verse or verses.
